Basics of First Light Fiber

First Light Fiber is a new broadband solution provided by Alcorn County Electric (ACE), your local electric cooperative. Since 1934, ACE has provided Alcorn County with essential electric services, even in remote rural locations. Our members asked us to investigate the option of providing high-speed internet to our service area, because their current providers weren’t providing the speed, reliability, and customer service necessary for today’s world. We listened to those requests and launched First Light Fiber to provide our community with world-class broadband solutions.

Fiber, short for fiber-optic lines, is actually tiny strands of glass that carry data (aka the internet) using lightwaves. In contrast, traditional DSL or cable connections are traditionally copper wires that transmit data using electricity. It is faster and more reliable to transmit the internet on fiber-optic lines.

Fiber is known for being “future-proof,” meaning the fiber we install today will be able to handle increased data loads as the need for more speed continues to grow. Fiber technology makes it possible for First Light Fiber to currently  deliver internet speeds up to 10 Gig (10,000 Mbps, megabits per second)—this is 200x faster than what the average home or business in our area currently receives. The current fastest speed possible across fiber optic cable is 10 Petabits per second which is 10,000,000,000 Mbps! That is enough bandwidth for all of Europe to watch Netflix at the same time.

Fiber is more reliable than other types of network and less prone to interference and complications from lightning and other natural elements.

Not only is fiber faster and more reliable than options like cable or DSL, but access to fiber internet can even raise the property value of homes by as much as $5,000.

Preregistration Details

By preregistering you are expressing interest in taking service when First Light Fiber comes to your community. At the time of preregistration, no signed contract is required for 200Mbps and 1Gbps service. When construction begins in your area, we will contact you to complete the necessary steps to take service.

There is no payment collected during preregistration. This process asks you to complete a quick form which tells us what services you are interested in for your home, business, or both.

Preregistration is open until construction is complete in your area. We encourage all members to preregister as soon as possible. With no installation fee required, why wouldn’t you?

You can change your package at any time. Preregistration only expresses your interest. If you choose to upgrade your plan to include phone service or a higher internet speed, you will pay the listed price of your new package and may be subject to a 2-year contract if selecting our 2Gbps package.

Construction and Equipment Details

Please know that the Board at ACE Power considered many factors when determining build plans and timelines for our community. The construction plan created was the best way to ensure our efforts to bring fiber to the home also provided our members with the most affordable rates we can offer.

Construction will begin by building the network in the community, followed by bringing fiber directly to homes and businesses.

Once we have the fiber to a home or business, we will contact members who have pre-registered and schedule an appointment to install the service inside your home or business. Every installation will include all wiring. Whole Home WiFi packages will also include installation and configuration of our powerful WiFi router.

First Light Fiber’s fiber-optic cabling will, for the most part, follow ACE’s power lines. Therefore, if your electric service is overhead, your fiber service will also run overhead. If your electric service is underground, First Light Fiber will bury a fiber cable approximately 10” to 12” deep along the same path as your underground power line.

No. With First Light Fiber, there are no installation fees!

At this time, residential areas are not required to sign a contract for our Fast (200 Mbps) or Super Fast (1Gbps) packages; however, a 2-year contract is required for those members who choose an Lightning Fast (2Gbps) package.  This contract is only required due to the higher cost of the Router/Gateway necessary for multi-gigabit applications.

As a First Light Fiber customer, you will be supplied with a state of the art WiFi router that is built to handle up to 1 Gig or 2 Gig internet speeds based on the service package you select. The cost of the router is included in the monthly service fee. The 1G wireless router supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz, simultaneous dual-band. 5GHz 802.11ac (WiFi 5) certified, 802.11a/g/n compatible. 2.4GHz 802.11n (WiFi 4) certified, 802.11b/g compatible.  The 2G wireless router in addition is 5GHz 11AX (WiFi 6) certified.

No. First Light Fiber retains ownership so that we can support the device and any troubles you may experience. We do not charge a monthly lease. First Light Fiber will replace the router free of charge if the device malfunctions due to manufacturer issues. If you choose to stop purchasing service from us, you are required to return your router to avoid an unreturned equipment fee.

Yes, you do have the option to disable the WiFi signal on your router and only connect to the internet through your hardwired devices. But really, why would you?

The WiFi router will bring our services into your home and support all broadband connections. During installation, our technicians will set up and show you how to use your new wireless network.

Wired connections to the router will provide the fastest speeds, but the WiFi router will also create a powerful wireless network in your home or business to ensure all devices such as laptops, tablets, smartphones, and smart TVs can connect wirelessly.

Yes. The router is equipped with four traditional ethernet ports to which you can physically connect computers and other devices.

Tech Support and Trouble Shooting

If you experience issues with your service, First Light Fiber will be able to troubleshoot and remotely examine your router to determine where problems may be occurring (no cost). If needed, First Light Fiber will send technicians to your location to troubleshoot (costs may be incurred if not on the Whole Home WiFi package).

One thing that sets us apart from other providers is our proactive monitoring of Router/Gateways. By providing this level of monitoring, we are doing our best to ensure our users have the best WiFi experience possible.

During a basic installation, First Light technicians will ensure your router is properly installed and your WiFi network is fully blanketing your home.  They will also help you connect your wired AND wireless devices, free of charge. First Light Fiber can also remotely troubleshoot your router to help identify issues, at no cost.
